Gound Effect when transitioning from water to land

Small-Scale Hoverwing with "Single Digit" Seating Capacity, Weight less than 1 Tonne.

  • Leisure:  Using the Hovercraft platform, this size of ground effect vehicle can provide the operator with the excitement and some of the challenge of flying an aircraft, but without the need for the regulations, certification, mandatory training/licensing.
As there is no appreciable altitude involved, there is less risk of injury or death in the event of losing control.  However, more effort has to be put into collision avoidance, as one does with a boat.
It can do everything that a cruising hovercraft can do, but its ability to separate from the water/ground surface means that it can clear large waves at sea and jump hedges and fences on the land.
  • Crop Spraying: Contactless spraying of crops with pesticide or fertiliser far quicker than a tractor and potentially without trampling the crops
  • Algae Spraying: Spraying algae and other potentially harmful blooms on water without significantly disturbing the surface
  • Oil Spill/Slick Recovery: A Hoverwing can rapidly carry pollution control equipment to a spill site with less disturbance to the surface, reducing the amount of spilt oil being dispersed into the water
  • Search and Rescue: In mud/quicksand and flood emergencies, conventional rib boats and hovercraft have to navigate round obstacles such as mud banks and groyns in estuaries, etc and fences, walls and hedges on flooded land.  Ground effect vehicles, subject to sufficient space for the run-up and landing, can jump over all of these, allowing straighter line access to victims.
  • Sight-Seeing trips: around archipelagos and on lakes for small groups
  • Archipelago, Lake or Loch Taxis: when the alternatives are a longer car journey or a bumpier/slower ride in a boat

Medium-Scale Craft with "Two Digit" Seating Capacity and Weight over 1 Tonne

  • Archipelago, large lake and coastal sight-seeing trips for tourism: For example, a 24-seater would make an ideal craft for providing holidaymakers tours along Dorset's Jurassic coast in more comfort than a converted fishing boat.  Likewise, there are many coastal locations around the world that could benefit from a service like this.
  • Crop Spraying: Contactless spraying of crops with pesticide or fertiliser far quicker than a tractor and potentially without trampling the crops
  • Algae Spraying: Spraying algae and other potentially harmful blooms on water without significantly disturbing the surface
  • Oil Spill/Slick Recovery: A medium size Hoverwing or Ekranoplan can rapidly carry pollution control equipment to a spill site with less disturbance to the surface, reducing the amount of spilt oil being dispersed into the water
  • Coastal Search and Rescue, where the ground effect configuration allows a straighter route to the scene than with a conventional craft or hovercraft, saving vital minutes.
  • 10's of persons:  High speed passenger ferrying.

Large-Scale Craft

  • "Ekranofreight" - Ekranoplan high speed shipments over sea, lakes, wide rivers and deserts.
This would be the "third mode" that is faster that seafreight but without the restrictions of airfreight.  This would for example, allow rapid transport of gas cylinders and other air mode prohibited goods in a timescale approaching that of airfreight.
Furthermore, these vehicles are effectively amphibious, so, for example, the journey could be between two seas or lakes over a tract of land in between, as long as the land in question is relatively flat and unpopulated.
